Phillies Win Home Opener….Posted: April 12, 2010 | Author: Phillies Outside | Filed under: Dailies | Tags: Anaheim, Angels, Brad Lidge, Chase Utley, Cole Hamels, Confessions of a She Fan, cookie competition, cooperstown cookies, G-less Nats, J-Roll, Jayson Werth, Jimmy Rollins, Los Angeles, Mets, MLB, Nationals, New York, pesky gnats, Philadelphia, phillies, Ryan Madson, Savannah Sand Gnats, Washington, Yankee Stadium, Yankees |17 Comments
Phillies home opener against the Washington Nationals may not have played out the way Cole Hamels wanted it too, but he still got the win even after giving up 6 hits and 4 runs through 5.2 innings having thrown 109 pitches.
Well I had started to call the Nationals the ‘Pesky Gnats’ since they can be a little troublesome as the Mets found out, then I got to thinking, well I don’t want to insult to many people early on in the season, I have almost met my quota for April and it’s only the 12th, so I checked to make sure there are no ball teams using the name. I guess they say you learn something everyday, well I found out the Savannah Sand Gnats exist and I was even more surprised to find out they are a Mets affiliate, that I think is just too funny considering the trouble they had with the ‘G-less’ Nats over the weekend.
Back to the game, 5th inning Chase Utley hit his bomb as part of the 5 run 5th, which obviously got Utley running the bases…
…add the 5 runs in the 5th to the 2 runs in the 4th and that was it for the Phillies, the ‘G-less’ Nats scored 1 run in the 2nd and 3 in the 4th which was all they could muster, the Phillies used Ryan Madson to close the game….
Day off tomorrow, so all eyes are on the Yankees home opener against the Angels, no I haven’t turned my AL allegiance to the Yankees, I will simply be watching to see if I win the ‘Cookies Contest’ from ‘Confessions of a She Fan’, if you didn’t already enter, then tough luck too late, if you did hope you didn’t pick the same score as me ’cause I never win, but if I do win the cookies they will be going to someone who’ll be far more appreciative of cookies in a Yankee Stadium tin….
Jimmy Rollins was out with a calf strain and Jayson Werth was replaced in the outfield with hip soreness. How long either will be out is unknown or if they will be out past the day off tomorrow.
Congrats on the win today. I’ll be posting all the scores people entered for the cookie contest later tonight, and then tomorrow we’ll know who wins! (My only prediction is that we’ll have more than one person eating cookies.)
Would you believe I’ve actually been to a Sand Gnats game? Their mascot is a very large gnat named Gnate. I have pictures of it, and of course my daughter needed to buy a stuffed one.
Rants, Raves, and Random Thoughts
so happy the phills won todaaaay. good luck with the yankees cookieees. i think the natss might finish ahead of the metts this season. hahah. anything is possible.
Jane – I think the only thing I eat more than cookies is M & M’s…
Sue – There’s just something about the name Sand Gnats.. that makes me want to buy Raid…. but thats cool you’ve seen them …
WB – It’s still early to really tell how things will end, but you never know the way the Nats are playing the Mets, they could be their Achilles heel this year
It must be nice to play the Nats 18 times a year…
The Three Bs
Well, glad to see you being considerate about the Savannah team. Associating them with the DCers, even through mild word-play, would have been a horrible slight.
They won but they tried to lose it to the Nats. I’m still not impressed by Hamels. Nowhere near what he once was. Nice to see the Phils beating up on teams early… means they’ll be tired by the NLCS and the Redbirds. Hehehehe…
Those cookies look DELISH!!! Ugh, I totally missed my chance to enter. Boo-frickin-hoo. But..I hope you win it…or won it…I’ve been a little out of the loop, can you tell? haha. Oh and can I just say I love your “legal bs” thing on your banner? Hahaha. xoxo http://diamondgirl55.mlblogs.com
LOL !! You could have asked me ya know. My cousin managed them for a year. (shhh bench coach of Chisox…and yes his brother too.)
Shaun – Almost as nice as playing the Astros 18 times…LOL
Jonestein – I try to be fair to those who are deserving.. 🙂
Jeff – hahahahahahahahahahaha in your dreams
DG – does this mean your back for the season or just visiting again… LOL
Mike – I see how it is, your connected and you come here name dropping… impressive if you weren’t a Mets fan LOL
got keep getting the digs in wouldn’t be right else… LOL
Congratulations on the win. I think that many Dodger fans call the Giants the Gnats.
Cat – does this mean they think they’re Giant Gnats – just big pests… LOL
