2010 Phillies Year in Review

It almost that time when we celebrate the begining of a new year
and invariably a new era in the successes of our teams. Before we jump forward
to what could be in 2011, here’s a small review of how my blog saw the Phillies
during 2010….

Here’s hoping you all have a very happy and safe New Year….

Attitude at Altitude…

– PhilliesOutside –

Sunday was a day that companies had the opportunity to commercialize and reap the
financial benefits from all those feeling guilty about not having given enough
attention to their Mothers during the year, a time when that expensive,
worthless, tradition of sending or giving a piece of stiff paper with some words
created by someone paid not nearly enough to dream up such drivel, just so that
those doing the giving can feel good about themselves for having at least on
this day given some attention to the person that gave them life. Yes folks it
was ‘Mother’s Day’ here in America, this past Sunday. For those that don’t care,
it was not Mother’s Day in England, that was back in March and it’s true calling
is ‘Mothering Sunday’, which is actually different than Mother’s Day, as with
most things that are commercialized propaganda, it’s different because it’s
something to do with religion. I personally didn’t receive any cards or well
wishes, even though throughout the year I have heard the word Mother used
in conjunction with other words when referencing me or calling to me.

The Phillies celebrated Mother’s by giving away Phillies
scarves or is it scarf’s, does it matter, since those that got the
scarves/scarf’s wore them with pride, unless they were an Atlanta Braves
fan of course, then they probably kept them to remember the day they went to Citizens
Bank Park
to see Atlanta get beat.

Even though the Phillies offense had the Braves pitcher on the ropes
early  with hits and home runs by the start of the 4th inning the Phillies
were up 4 – 0, because guys like this….

….decided to show up and play ball, Polanco hit a homer in the
2nd with a pink bat, not that it matters too much the color of the bat, it’s
still a home run, no extra points for the bat being pink, probably extra cash
when it gets auctioned off for the charity.

The Braves pitcher, Kawakami, held his own
from the 4th and stayed in putting up respectable numbers through 6.2 innings,
even though he took the loss. The Phillies had Cole Hamels on
the mound, who during the first 4 innings looked as though he was going to be
cruising his way to a shut out and show Jamie Moyer he could do it too.
Alas it wasn’t to be, even after a major conflab on the mound…..

….somewhere the old ‘K’ Cole got lost and
confused about where to throw the ball….

….he managed to give up 3 runs in the 5th inning, that was
enough for Manuel who let the bull pen finish the game, led by Chad Durbin who
threw 2 scoreless, the bull pen was un-hittable, literally, they struck out 5
over the 4 innings of work and never allowed a base runner, even Lidge pitched
the 9th without giving anyone a mild seizure.

As with any day when the Phillies play at CBP, there is always at
least one creature that gets onto the field, no tasers needed on Sunday it was
just the…..

….doing his duties, or should I say trying too. Yes, he’s been
reportedly hailed as the best mascot in sports and I understand you either love
him or hate him, but it has become clearer that most hate him because of the
team he’s associated with, not for what he does, because lets face it, no matter
who you are, if he was your teams mascot you’d think he was the coolest mascot
ever, or at least your kids or grand kids or great grand kids would think he was
pretty cool….

So the celebration of Mother’s is over and the Phillies
headed to Colorado where the air is thin and they use some kind of machine
to make the balls stay in the park, or so they say.

There was something in the air, maybe it was moisture of some
sort, but Charlie was trying to figure it out….

….as the Rockies made some accusations of
someone spying on the game from the Phillies bullpen, not sure
what it was all about and I’m not sure Charlie was to sure either, but it
prompted Victorino to use the bullpen phone and tell them to stop clowning
around.

It certainly wasn’t the bull pen the Rockies
needed to watch, it was the Phillies catcher, Carlos Ruiz….

….who went 4 for 5, one of them a homer, and it wasn’t a fluke
or the thin air or altitude or something they put in the bottled water in Colorado,
he’s actually been hitting that good of late, with a.354 avg, he’s got himself a
little ‘on base’ streak going, I think he’s actually been on base in all but 1
of the games he’s played this season, he’s picking up more walks and now he’s in
the number 7 hitting slot, he’s getting more hits, lets hope he can sustain this
for the year or majority of it anyway.

The Phillies defense were showing off some quality
glove work…

….but that still didn’t stop Colorado, with Hawpe
back off the DL and going 2 for 4 on the night, the Rockies managed
to get it all tied at 5 going into the 9th inning. In fashion of the last couple
of years the Phillies put up a 4 spot in the top of the 9th and
the Rockies where unable to find a way to answer, with Contreras pitching
the 9th, who seems to be solidifying himself as a late inning guy that Manuel
can depend on, the Rockies went down on just 1 hit in the 9th, giving the
Phillies game 1 of this series.

Other News:

Brad Lidge has a sore elbow, waaaaaaaaaa!!! go back on
the DL then don’t tie up a roster spot if your going to keep whining all year so
you have an excuse when you blow your first and subsequent saves this year.

Dallas Braden, who became news worthy earlier this month
when he accused A-Rod of being a ‘dick’, which by the way Braden,
we all knew this before you accused him, just threw a perfect game. So congrats
to him, but you did sour your win somewhat by both you and your Gran-Ma
referencing A-Rod when talking of your perfect game. As much as A-Rod
will take credit for anything good and nothing bad, this I am sure he played no
part in, so let A-Rod go back to denying PED use and not have to
deny knowing unwritten rules of baseball. He’s a Yankee player,
those unwritten rules don’t apply, that’s another unwritten rule.

Milton Bradley is still a bigger ‘dick’ than A-Rod.

Cliff Lee goes for his first win of the season tonight,
the question is if he gets it, will it count, since it’s against Baltimore.

Roy Halladay goes home for first ever start in Colorado,
hard to believe that a guy like Halladay never pitched in Colorado.
This homecoming should be sweet for Halladay and not so sweet for Rockies
fans as Halladay goes for win number 7 and the Phillies try
and clinch the series tonight.

Phillies Win Home Opener….

Phillies home opener against the Washington Nationals may not have played out the way Cole Hamels wanted it too, but he still got the win even after giving up 6 hits and 4 runs through 5.2 innings having thrown 109 pitches.

Well I had started to call the Nationals the ‘Pesky Gnats’ since they can be a little troublesome as the Mets found out, then I got to thinking, well I don’t want to insult to many people early on in the season, I have almost met my quota for April and it’s only the 12th, so I checked to make sure there are no ball teams using the name. I guess they say you learn something everyday, well I found out the Savannah Sand Gnats exist and I was even more surprised to find out they are a Mets affiliate, that I think is just too funny considering the trouble they had with the ‘G-less’ Nats over the weekend.

Back to the game, 5th inning Chase Utley hit his bomb as part of the 5 run 5th, which obviously got Utley running the bases…

utleybaserunning.jpg

…add the 5 runs in the 5th to the 2 runs in the 4th and that was it for the Phillies, the ‘G-less’ Nats scored 1 run in the 2nd and 3 in the 4th which was all they could muster, the Phillies used Ryan Madson to close the game….

gameend.jpg

….while Lidge is in recovery, Madson picked up his second save of the season to give the Phillies a 7-4 win.

Day off tomorrow, so all eyes are on the Yankees home opener against the Angels, no I haven’t turned my AL allegiance to the Yankees, I will simply be watching to see if I win the ‘Cookies Contest’ from ‘Confessions of a She Fan’, if you didn’t already enter, then tough luck too late, if you did hope you didn’t pick the same score as me ’cause I never win, but if I do win the cookies they will be going to someone who’ll be far more appreciative of cookies in a Yankee Stadium tin….

coasfcookiecontest.jpg

….so for tomorrow only go Yankees beat the Angels by a score of 7-3.

Other News
Jimmy Rollins was out with a calf strain and Jayson Werth was replaced in the outfield with hip soreness. How long either will be out is unknown or if they will be out past the day off tomorrow.

A New Begining….

It’s finally here. Spring is Sprung…

springavatarBYEBYE.jpg

…all the cheap shots at the American League teams are out of my system, until something really horrendous happens, it’s time to focus on the task at hand, supporting the Philadelphia Phillies through thick and thin, taking all the abuse other fans can give, and giving it back in the same good humored rivalry it is all meant.

Accepting that when my team does something, which to the average human, is totally off the wall and far out there, they are doing it for the best interests of the club and not to spite the fans.

Everyone gets a clean slate, even umpire Ed Rapauno, gets a fresh start and can step out without fear of humiliation in Philadelphia, until that first call anyway. It’s a time when Jimmy Rollins and Jose Reyes have the same number of stolen bases, or a time when even Brad Lidge is no longer a…

kloser.jpg

…loser.

It truly is a special time, the Cubs have the same record as the Cardinals, Milton Bradley has as many RBI’s as Albert Pujols, and any player can claim to equal Ryan Howards home run quantity.

The time has come to start waving those towels, the time has come to grill in the parking lot, the time has come to never be short of beer, the time has come to start screaming LET’S GO….

Junk Mail can make you Millions

This week, as normal I
received my regular volume of Junk Mail, ordinarily it ends up in
the trash can along with the chain letter style emails family and
friends seem to enthusiastically send out, I can only assume in fear
that the punch line of said emails will come true. For me however more
bad luck can only transform itself into good luck, plus the knowledge
that emails do not have any power over the universe and the fact that if
emails could render anybody rich and shameless just by forwarding
it to 10 people then we would receive them under the same pretence as we
do the  ‘Make Millions from Google‘ emails.

There seems to be a new resurgence
of emails relating to money that you don’t even have to do anything to
obtain this wealth, you just have to be you. I refer to the ‘inheritance‘,
email lottery’ or the ‘you’ve been selected‘ type emails.
Sometimes boredom gets in the way of common sense and the lack of
baseball induced excitement invariably increases the boredom I decided
to look at some of these emails.

‘Inheritance’

It seems that I, along with
all the other ‘undisclosed recipients’ have an Aunt or some other
relative, who believes I am the sole heir to her fortunes. It doesn’t
matter that I have older siblings, I am still the sole survivor of her
millions, and all I have to do is send my information to the attorney
listed to have the 340 million US dollars transferred to my bank
account.

So there you have it, I am
now rich and shameless and can purchase box seats behind home
plate for every game at home and away that the Phillies will play
in the 2010 season.

’email lottery’

It also seems that this week
my email address along with all those ‘undisclosed recipients’ have
won the ’email lottery’ in Australia and Europe. I won 2 email
lotteries that I didn’t enter, how cool is that, and all I have to do is
respond with my personal and banking information to collect the millions
of dollars in foreign currency, which after a quick conversion would
give me another 680 million US dollars

What more could I ask for, I
am more than just ‘rich and shameless’ I am now a billionaire and
all I have done is open 3 emails.

‘you’ve been selected’

How much more money could I
make this week, it seems quite a bit actually because my email address
is very popular. I received from 4 different people telling that I
personally, along with all the other ‘undisclosed recipients’
were people of good nature and would be able to benefit from the 137
million US dollars stuck in an account in Nigeria, and that the person
controlling that account needs my help and I can get to keep 10% of the
funds, if I just give them my personal information and banking details.

I figured 10% of 137 million
US dollars, is peanuts compared to the billion or so I already had, but
greed being the ultimate evil I wanted everything, so I added the 4 lots
of 14 million US dollars to my total income this week.

Of course on top of all this
money I could have also made millions from Google.

What amazes me about the
stupidity of the people that send these emails is they believe that
people are stupid enough to respond to them.

1 – The email addresses they
send them from in no way reflect the content of the email as most come
from the new spam email service supplied by ‘gmail’. I know a lot
of normal people use ‘gmail‘ accounts, but eventually ‘gmail
will get the same bad name as ‘msn‘, ‘hotmail’, ‘yahoo
and ‘aol‘. Although all but ‘aol‘ has managed a recovery
from there email servers being branded as spam accounts by many.

2- The IP addresses of the
mail servers which send these emails is not even close to the location
they claim to be sending them from and most times is being used as a
mirror server.

3- The return email address
can never be found as it is cancelled moments after the mass email is
sent out.

4 – If you are going to
personalize an email and hope someone takes the bait, DON’T
send it to ‘undisclosed recipients’

To all those people that
have being irresponsible and fallen for one of these types of emails,
you really shouldn’t be allowed to have an email address, and to all
those people that find it a requirement to harass us with these spam
emails, do me a favor and TAKE MY EMAIL ADDRESS OFF YOUR F*CKING LIST

Back to baseball – It seems Brad
Lidge
wants us to feel sorry for him because he may have an
injury which he didn’t disclose, he felt it was better to blow a save in
the World Series than go on the DL. Well Brad, now you have to put up
2008 type numbers in 2010 for any normal person to take you seriously
again….

Finally bye bye Brett
Myers….

If you stuck around long
enough to read this babbling piece of crap then your as bored as me
without baseball….

GO EAGLES….for now

Phillies take series from Reds, set new club record

Jayson Werth went deep to record his 20th home run of the season making him the 4th player to be on 20 home runs or more before the All Star Break, a first for the Phillies franchise and only the second MLB team to accomplish this feat. Werth has put up impressive numbers in the first half of this season and has more than proved that he can be an everyday player, I personally thought he would struggle as an everday outfielder, so well done Jayson, you are on a season setting personal best. Jayson’s name has been thrown in the mix for the All Star Game, since Beltran is injured, is Werth worthy of an All Star pick, well he has certainly put up the numbers, however I believe there are others who are a little more deserving, if it’s an outfielder they need then I would have to go with Kemp, he has better numbers this year, if it’s just any position player then there are a number to choose from and everyone will have there own personal favorite.

Chase Utley, in a ball park that is suposed to allow almost anyone to go deep, showed everyone last night that you dont need to hit the ball over the fence to get a home run, his second inside the park home run against the reds. This one came in the 3rd inning and it was Utley’s 20th homer of the year, although there wasn’t a play at the plate this time, he needed some recovery time to catch his breath, who wouldn’t.

Jamie Moyer pitched through 5 innings giving up 6 runs on 8 hits, since the offence took the lead in the bottom of the 5th Jamie was the pitcher of record giving him, his 254th career win. Jamie gave up two home runs, not unusual for Jamie, all in all a good outing for him.

Chan Ho Park gave another stellar performance from the bullpen, 3 scoreless innings, giving up 1 walk, with 4 strike outs.

Brad Lidge continues to make everyone nervous in the 9th inning, after getting the 1st two batters he gave up a walk, but came back nicely to close out the game with a scoreless inning.

Even though the Phillies have taken six of seven in this home stand, they still have a below .500 record at home this season, a sweep of the Pirates would put them still 1 game shy of the .500 mark. We all know that sweeping the Pirates is a huge task, they have played well against NL East teams this year, I for one am glad we have Blanton, Hamels and Happ to face them this weekend.

Victorino won the vote for the final spot on the All Star team, he is more than deserving of his place, he again last night picked up a couple of walks, a hit and a couple of RBI’s and continues to play gold glove quality defense in the outfield. Well Done Shane!!

To the Pirates, welcome to Philadelphia, the in state rivalry isn’t quite as intense as some would think, but still it will make for a good weekend, especially if the Phillies keep up this excellent home stand performance.

RAUL IBANEZ will he return today or will they wait till tomorrow, I think he will probably be here today, but my gut tells me they should probably wait till tomorrow.
