So It Begins….

The New York Yankees visit Fenway Park to take on the Boston Red Sox. There is so much wrong with the opening to this years season, it’s the 30th time these 2 teams have played the opener.
First of all the current reigning World Series champions open the season on the road, it wouldn’t be so bad if it was a team that had little or no fan base, even with the hyped up pricing at Yankee stadium the fans do splurge for special occasions and attend games, so that’s not an excuse, but we have heard Yankee fans whine before and this will just let them whine some more.
The game is in Boston, okay so this is purely an observational comment, that unfortunately I have no substance to back it up with hard facts, I could maybe invent an inside source, but that would just be playing like the media boys and being a politician about it, anyway back on point, during the off-season there appeared to be an inordinate amount of subliminal promotion of the Boston Red Sox.
The teams themselves have what is probably a fan base that consists of arguably the highest percentage of arrogant fans in baseball and probably the world of sports, not only do both sets of fans believe they follow the greatest sports franchise that was ever created on this planet, they also believe that they are the only fans to know the facts, that they are the only ones to see the truth in plays, when the team has a call against them that is seen as an injustice to the whole concept of baseball. They will also feel that anyone who dares to write or speak any kind of non-supportive words or sentences will be a premeditated, merciless intent of attack against them personally and therefore will not find any element of humor of any form in such types of communication, and thus will feel to enter into a communicative exchange or even make comment on such a expression, would be seen to actually accept that there maybe an element of truth in what was communicated or that not everyone believes these 2 teams are the be all end all of sports franchises, thus they stick with communicating among themselves, unless they sense a turncoat that they can easily convert.
So, having said all that, not all fans of these 2 franchises are like this, just enough to warrant the expressive terms used to identify either of these clubs.
Little known things – fact or fiction –
Boston Red Sox was known as the Red Stockings, Stockings was changed to Sox to eliminate the growing belief that many Bostonian fans were cross dressing transvestites.
‘Red Sox Nation’ was originally a derogatory term, inferring the fans were a group with an imaginary history or goal.
Yankees – Yankee was originally used to reference people from the Boston area, descendants of the English.
Yankee or Yank is commonly used to refer to anyone from the United States by other countries, sometimes but not always a derogatory inference.
Now I have suitable provided sufficient data to ensure zero comments from either sets of fans, for the rest of us mere mortal baseball teams the season really starts on Monday and it will be a beginning of who knows what, it’s the start of a season of unknowns, all we know for sure is that our teams will participate and our support for them will not falter. No matter how good or bad they perform we will continue to publish post that ultimately support them to the end.

everything else is labeled Phillies Outside so is this blog now, so it’s easier for me, not
that anyone gives a crap, and yes you will still find the same
rambling, sarcastic, drivel as always here, unless I am feeling
particularly friendly then I may up the sarcasm a little more, no it’s not always like a kindergarten playground where you punch the ones you really like, sometimes you actually have to smack the crap out of someone cause they deserve it…
On
to the post at hand, a review of my past predictions and I can assure
everyone that there is absolutely no bias on these predictions, there is
no hatred targeted at any team, and just because some see a certain
blue team as the ‘Evil Empire’ and the fact that some Philadelphia
Phillies players have inferred a wish to exact revenge on that said evil empire,
I would like to assure everyone that none of that was taken into
consideration when constructing my predictions.
I see the American
League like this:
…Yes much to the pleasure of some and displeasure of others I did not select the Yankees to make the post season this year, there jump to the top of the leader board for most global denominated currency spent on average per player for a sports franchise for last year, (in case you didn’t know, the most spent per player on average is normally monopolized by English Premiership Football Teams or soccer teams to those less edumacated, last year the Yankees jumped into the top 10 at number 1), this will come back to bite them this year, as it has with other sports franchises before them in there respective sporting championships. The American League playoff picture will look like this:
Seattle Mariners vs Chicago White Sox – Mariners win
Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays – Rays win
ALCS Mariners vs Rays – Mariners win
I see the National League like this:
…No I didn’t make a mistake with the picture, this is just a reminder that the Yankees couldn’t even buy there way in via the National League, although inside sources inferred that they tried, by way of offering Mr. McCourt some under the table assistance with the silencing and/or gratifying of the soon to be ex-Mrs McCourt. The National League playoff picture will look like this:

The San Diego Padres fans, like most in this division don’t need to spend much this year, but….
…should enjoy what they have, while they’ve gotit. Who knows how long PetCo Park will actually be PetCo Park, and lets
face it there is not much going to happen here over the next few years,
with Jeff Moorad needing another $145 million in 4 years to secure
ownership, he and his financing buddies will have essentially spent $290
million to own a $200 million debt that has almost no chance of winning
anything anytime soon.
The San Francisco Giants fans, should also enjoy more time at home this
year and do nothing but…
…try and enjoy the sounds and sights of your town and be thankful that Alcatraz is no longer operational, otherwise that’s where you’d have to go to watch games, because this year it’s going to seem like the Giants players and organization are nothing more than criminals taking your money for no return, the biggest disappointment for these fans will be the lack-luster performance of their star freak, Lincecum.
The Arizona Diamondbacks fans, should like so many others…
…stay close to home, go visit the Grand Canyon if you haven’t already, because by the end of the season it’ll feel like the D’Backs have left a huge gaping hole in your life with the almost but not quite season.

Phillies Unanswered Question…..

go 10 innings and end it as a 3-3 tie. Nobody likes a tie in baseball,
but it’s spring training and lets face it, these guys are just using
each other to try new things out, tone up pitchers arms and to see how
fielders and hitters have adjusted during the off season, plus thrown
in there is the chance for minor league players to show there stuff to the
big league coaches in the hope they may be allowed out of the minors
earlier than scheduled
One of the things currently unanswered from the Phillies camp is:
“What the hell is with Jayson Werth and his beard and hair?”.
Suggestions that have been thrown around are that he’s a keen fisherman and he’s emulating Captain Birds Eye, another is he misses Eric Bruntlett (he must be the only one)
and finally he had a gig as Santa and like it too much, but I have to
be honest these are all hype and misinformation thrown out to disguise
the real reason behind the new look. After some deep down discoveries
about some of his off season activities, my findings are that he is in
negotiations to star in some upcoming commercials for Geico as they try to give teams some extra insurance. “isn’t that what the bench players and bullpen do?” Okay
so its not Geico, even if he does look and act like a caveman, but
seriously, if you see this Jayson… “HAVE A FRICKIN SHAVE AND A HAIR
CUT, you look like a serial killer”
Around Baseball
The New York Yankees backup catcher, Francisco Cervelli, got dinged in the helmet by Jays pitcher, Zech Zinicola. Cervelli picked up his second concussion since November. The Yankees
waited till the 9th inning to retaliate, now come on guys it’s spring
training and pitchers are going to be wild, especially those in later
innings. I guess this definitely sets up some interesting meeting for
the regular season between these two clubs.
The Dodgers fans thought they were in the twilight zone Saturday when Guns ‘n’ Roses started blaring out, everybody stood up ‘standing
ovation or just checking to see if they were dreaming or had been
caught up in one of those ‘back to the future’ type movies‘, we’ll never really know, but it was real, Eric Gagne was once again on the mound in a Dodgers uniform. I’m sure Broxton won’t lose any sleep worrying about the closers spot.
MLB obviously have there own way of doing things, and like most major corporations believe they know best, although they test for amphetamines, steroids and other PED’s they do NOT test for HGH although it is banned. In the UK recently a rugby player was banned for 2 years for testing positive for HGH, however MLB
not convinced the test is good will research themselves with their own
experts before attempting to implement a test for a substance they have
banned.

Umpires get some updates, following last years post season, and regular
season too, which for all the great plays and achievements of players
and teams will probably be the year known for ‘BAD UMPIRING’. MLB is seen to be making some changes at least, former supervisors Marty Springstead, Jim McKean and Rich Garcia have not been retained and umpires such as Randy Marsh and Charlie Reliford have been made supervisors. I am not sure this will change much other than allow MLB to to claim they are trying, and I am sure some managers will say, “Yes they are VERY TRYING at times”.
I hear people calling for more video playback, but still that’s still
based on someone’s opinion of what they see, even in the NFL
they still get it wrong after video playback. Umpires don’t have to be
perfect, just get the obviously calls right the rest is all part of the
great game of baseball.

So you see, the Phillies did score 10 runs or more in games 3 and 5, there is a chance after seeing this series that the bullpen thing is fixed, and the Dodgers didn’t win, I leave you all to draw your own conclusions as to Jeff being right on the last 2 items.
I personally think that getting 0 right out of 5 isn’t that bad….

NLCS Games 1 & 2

NLCS GAME 1 – Phillies 8 vs. Dodgers 6 This game started off as a good pitching match-up, by the end of the 4th inning both pitchers seemed to be in their groove, the Dodgers had the advantage of a 1 run lead and nothing looked as if it would change anytime soon. The top of the 5th inning something did change, not sure what, but it did, the Phillies got to Kershaw and exploded with 5 runs, I am sure at this point many of the Phillies fans were ecstatic with Hamels pitching with the poise of 2008, how could the Dodgers come back. Well we found out in the bottom of the 5th, where the Dodgers got to Hamels with 3 runs making it a 1 run game. Both starting pitchers, Kershaw and Hamels became the…
….VICTIMS OF GAME 1, their chances of greatness in this game were killed off by each teams offence. The 6th inning and both teams were into their respective bullpens, I am sure this delighted many Dodger fans, since the Phillies bullpen has been below standard for most of the season. The Dodgers bullpen pitched 4 1/3 innings using 5 different pitchers. The Phillies bullpen pitched 3 2/3 innings using 6 different pitchers. For the most part both bullpens had solid performances. The Dodgers bullpen gave up 3 runs and the Phillies bullpen gave up 2 runs, miraculously these all came in the 8th inning. The 8th inning not only gave us the deciding runs, the only runs that both bullpens gave up, but it also gave us…
…BELOW PAR PLAYERS, for Sherrill, it was his inability to find the strike zone, and when he did it was front and center for a long ball, and for Utley it was a throw to first to complete a double play that just sailed off into the dugout, I do not believe the hesitation from Rollins was at fault, Utley should have held the ball if that was the case. It was definitely a nail-biter for both fans and in my eyes lived up to all expectations of excitement. It was one of those games where either team could have won it and for game 1 the Phillies were the lucky ones. PLAYERS OF THE GAME…
Carlos Ruiz and Russell Martin, both catchers played outstanding baseball at the plate and behind the plate, they each handled a number and variety of pitchers, played good defense and showed us offense too. HIGHLIGHT PLAYERS…
Loney and Ibanez are my highlight players, Loney because it seemed like he was always on base, he went 3 for 4 with a walk, an RBI and 2 runs scored. Ibanez because he went 2 for 4 3 RBI’s and 2 runs scored which included the 8th inning, 3 run bomb. NLCS GAME 2 – Phillies 1 vs. Dodgers 2 This game was a pure pitchers duel both starters went pitch for pitch with each other, it seemed like they both had something to prove, both guys facing clubs that had given them a rough deal when parting ways. Martinez went 7 innings giving up just 2 hits, while Padilla went 7 1/3 innings giving up 4 hits, a walk and a run. It was definitely another nail-biter for both sets of fans. The Phillies bullpen managed to give away the winning run to the Dodgers in the 8th inning by walking Ethier with 2 outs and the bases loaded after Utley threw away the tying run earlier in the inning. Because of the way the starting pitchers performed for me they were the… PLAYERS OF THE GAME…
and the VICTIMS OF THE GAME, because neither pitcher got the win, yet the performances they both produced were definitely winning performances. This game, like game 1 was a game for the taking by either team, but once again there were in my eyes players that didn’t perform and because of that made it harder for their respective teams to win…
…BELOW PAR PLAYERS, Ramirez because he went 0 for 4 with a strikeout, but mostly because he had the opportunity to put the game well out of the Phillies reach, but chose to first pitch swing for a pop up. Utley because he didn’t learn from the game 1 mistake and made the same identical throwing error, that should have been a double play and the tying run would have possibly held at 3rd and may have allowed the Phillies to go on for the win. HIGHLIGHT PLAYERS…
…Howard for seizing his opportunity in the 4th inning, by hitting a long ball off Padilla, and Pierre for his excellent base running to bring the tying run home. So now it’s off to Philadelphia and Citizens Bank Park for the next 3 games of this series. If the first 2 games are anything to go by then it is going to make a lot of fans on both sides more nervous than ever. For baseball fans in general it should produce some more of the most exciting baseball we’ve seen all year long. The Yankees and the Angels played the first game of the ALCS series Friday, which saw CC Sabathia pitch 8 tremendous innings, throwing 113 pitches with 7 strikeouts, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits. Matsui came through as a DH should, going 2 for 3 with a walk and 2 RBI’s. The Angels appeared to have a lack-luster performance due to the dominance of Sabathia. The Yankees won the game 4-1 taking a series lead. Game 2 is Saturday (tonight) evening at Yankee Stadium where the Yankees will be looking to go 2-0 up in the series and the Angels hoping they can take a tie back to Anaheim. – it will be, what it will be – |
Media just love the Yankees

LCS kicks off tomorrow with the Phillies and Dodgers, this series in itself should be full of some amazing games. Since the division series games fizzled with commanding sweeps and the only real intense excitement was the ending of the last 2 games between the Rockies and the Phillies, then the fans should hope for and expect both the ALCS and NLCS to be jam packed with intense exciting moments as a build up to the World Series… but will they, as I read and watch the stories that take us up to the start of the LCS games the thing I notice is the New York Yankees, that’s it nothing else. Some by line, small print or 2 minute segment may include a brief look at the Angels, Dodgers and at times the Phillies, but everything seems to be centered around the Yankees, even the opening page of these MLB Blogs has a headline indicating 4 teams in the LCS yet pictures just 1 rotation, and they highlight a New York MLB Blog which focuses on the Yankees rotation, okay so they mention in passing other teams, but it’s about the Yankees. I am beginning to believe that they spent so much money on the team and stadium that they are now stuck for advertising and so are taking hand-outs from all sources. Leaving others struggling for scraps…
Causing confusion amongst the remainder…
Or maybe the lack of spotlight is giving the others chance to gather their thoughts for the games ahead and sleep off some of the pressure…
(incase your wondering, it’s a high pressure bed with some eye candy of course) It could always just be something plain and simple, like the sports media are all full of hot air...
and need the Yankees to draw attention to themselves. They can speculate all they want about ex-Yankee manager vs. current Yankee manager or an all LA World Series, unlike some other orchestrated sports the media does not control the outcome to increase ratings, – it will be, what it will be – |
Phillies head to NLCS…

…It wasn’t easy by any means, but they made it in true Philadelphia style.
The team with the most comeback wins needed 2 more in Colorado, and on Sunday and Monday night the Phillies offence delivered…
…and now with the Phillies will head to a warmer climate and more sensible game times (we hope) and meet the Dodgers in the start of the NLCS.
Now we are down to 4 teams and I have to say there is no clear front runner and there is no underdog.
For all 4 teams it must now be GAME ON….
