The Great Debate…

HTML clipboardThe debate as to if this really is the beginning of
a new decade seems to go on and on, some endured the sights of Ryan Seacrest
and Dick Clark telling us we were seeing the end of a decade and the
start of a new one. A good number of my fellow bloggers have posted their
personal choices for players and teams of the last decade, in addition to receiving
primarily good comments some have been told the decade is not yet over.

The
question is who’s right?

Is it a decade or NOT a decade…?

Those who believe it is NOT a decade do so
on the understanding that there was no year ‘0’ so the first decade was from
year 1 through year 10, thus giving us another year before the decade ends. If
this is how we determine decades then governments around the world spent millions on celebrating the
millennium a year early, although this is no
guide, since governments are known for jumping the gun on things and spending
money for no apparent reason.

Those who believe the decade is truly over do so
on the premise that a decade starts with ‘0’ and ends with ‘9’, thus giving us
2010 as the start of a new
decade. So do those same people denounce the NO year ‘0’
theory or do they just not care.

This is how I see it…

A decade is the span of any 10 year
period, and although in reality the believers of the NO year ‘0’ are
factual in their beliefs, the decades of years do not go by the simplistic rule
of every 10 years from year ‘1’, the
term decade depicting years is exactly as
the majority see it, i.e. “60’s”, “70’s”, “80’s”
etc are what they are
decades.

In summary if you comment on someone’s post and
tell them the decade isn’t truly over, due to no year ‘0’, your incorrect to do
so.

I am sure many will disagree with my conclusion,
but if you really want to get specific and technical every year ends a decade of
some kind or another, however the use of the term decade is referring to the
“10’s” periods of a century and a century references the
“100’s” period of a millennium.

HAPPY NEW YEAR…

Happy New Year to all, yes even
Yankee fans… It’s a new year and spring training is just around the
corner, which means everyone is back to even, well for the first day of
baseball anyway, after that it’s anyone’s guess as to who ends up where.
It’s to early for predictions, for me anyway, but I have already had a
glimpse into the future as this picture was taken at 12:48am January 1st
2010 and I actually received it at 7:48pm December 31st 2009, so here is
my son, Dave and daughter-in-law , Lucy as I saw them in the future, as
you can see a small amount of motion blur from traveling through time,
that or the celebratory New Years beverages had gotten the best of
them…

 …it’s a little soon
for me to look further into the future and come up with predictions for
the coming season, but it’s not to late to have a glimpse of how I saw
2009, a few images I used in my blog during 2009
(images
in no particular order)

Seasonal Stuff….

The holiday season is on us and Christmas
Day is almost here, some people are feeling charitable, some not so and
others are in full swing of the holiday season.

For
the Philadelphia Phillies fans it’s been a wonderful Halladay
time. I admit it, I didn’t think the Phillies would be able to swing the
deal and thought that the Red Sox and Yankees would be in a bidding war
for Halladay, it was also my contention that this bidding war
would make Toronto hold onto Halladay till July 2010. How
wrong was I, and I am happy to say I was wrong,
the fact that Roy
Halladay
even signed an extension for what appears to be below
market value for his talents shows that he has the Christmas spirit and
gave the fans in Philadelphia an early gift…

…Thanks Roy… and a Merry Christmas to
you too, here’s hoping you get your long sought after ring at the end of
the 2010 season.

The Yankees have added some
outfielders and made the team for 2010 just as formidable as the one
that won it all in 2009. The player that didn’t resign though, Johnny
Damon has some time to reflect on what he will do in 2010, in just a
couple of months he has gone from a entertaining fans in the World
Series to the World Wrestling Entertainment, I am guessing this was to
be expected, since he was dreaming of this during the World Series,
using a dominant WWE superstars entrance music when he would come to the
plate during the World Series, if you didn’t know or didn’t hear about
it, he was using the music of Batista from the WWE, apparently
Damon
is an ‘avid‘ member of the ‘WWE Universe’. Seen here
with Batista, it’s amazing how small Damon actually appears, almost as
small as his mentality.

 I am sure that Johnny
will get to play somewhere in 2010, even if it is in the WWE…

Other little known news items that caught
my eye over the last couple of weeks….

Apple – If you own an Apple product,
beware, it seems that some authorized service locations have refused
warranty work due to the appearance of possible contamination by
cigarette smoke, Yes under the rules laid out by OSHA the residue left
by cigarette smoke is a biohazard, as is talc and calcium. A word of
warning be careful with your laptops, iPhones or any other Apple
product.

Microsoft – Yes you’ve all heard
it, Word and Office will cease to be sold on January 11th, due to a
court ruling, based on some patent infringement for ‘xml coding’, dream
on, it’ll never happen, you know Microsoft will resolve the issue with
time to spare.

Verizon – Tells the FCC the
additional charges added to the ETF (early termination fee) are due to
‘because they want to’ and the reasoning for charges by accidentally
opening a web browser on a phone, without the browser package, are ‘in
the agreement’, ‘if you don’t like it go else where’ that’s when the ETF
becomes more apparent. (just glad I have AT&T)

Santa
Claus –
Is in as much trouble as the rest of us, it seems the
economy is even affecting the guy that has the abilities to deliver
faster and further than UPS and Fed-Ex combined. Santa dropped by the
Sun Trust bank in Nashville, Tennessee and made a withdrawal with the
aid of a gun, claiming he needed the money to pay his elves, he promptly
stuffed the money in his red sack and fled, no eye witnesses saw a
sleigh and reindeer though…

Great
Britain
has banned the use of Photoshop when used to make models
appear improved in and advertisement and claim it’s due to the product
they are trying to sell, i.e. weight loss, face creams etc.

Some ‘THANKS’ and ‘Seasonal Wishes’

I would like to give my sincere thanks
and seasonal wishes for a safe Christmas and New Year to all the members
of both the US and British Armed Forces serving their respective
countries with honor (honour).

Finally
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all my
fellow bloggers, eat, drink and be merry, just don’t drive too.

I
leave you all with another special Christmas song, the chorus I have
used for a few years now as a ring tone this time of year, if you
haven’t heard this one it’s freakin hilarious (I think so anyway), it’s
done by an Australian comedian, Kevin Wilson… I tried to find one with
him actually singing the song live, but was unable, this video that
someone put together, I though was kind of fitting. WARNING – The
contents of this video contain language not suitable for minors.

HO, HO, HO….

A Time of Confusion…

The last few weeks have been a confusing
time for a lot of people, with talks of players going here and there, we
now have to make sense of the moves that have happened and look to see
if teams will continue to confuse with more moves before
spring training places are set.

Its not just baseball that has had confusion,
lets face it if your not already tired of hearing about Tiger Woods then
you should be, it’s so much what happened as the number of women that
have come out of there hiding places to claim notoriety. Woods has been
crucified more than Clinton, so it seems that we hold sports
personalities to a higher standard than any of our politicians. The
media give no consideration to the truth of anything, if a woman that
can place herself in close proximity to Woods at anytime over the last
few years, lays claim to an affair with him or a one night stand then
she must be telling the truth. Lets face it, nothing is 100%, even voice
messages and text messages are no guarantee, anyone with any ounce of
knowledge can fake any type of electronic transmission as easily as some
of these women are sure to have faked orgasms and stories.

I am sure there would be more women
coming forward if only Google was more positive with the search
responses, because what we haven’t heard of, is those women who googled
Tiger only to find there pending claim to fame would be a character from
a cereal maker.

Yes they’re the women who are confused
why the others who actually came forward would want this character on
their resume of conquests.

There’s confusion in the NFL,
Bill Belichick sent players home for arriving late to practice, yep
that’ll teach ’em, give ’em the day off. The Browns
actually beat the Steelers, how is that not confusing, and if that
wasn’t enough for sports fans in Cleveland, the powers to be decided to
replace the Indians manager with someone no better, in comes Manny Acta,
now there is something very confusing about Manny, allegedly,
according to Roger anyway.

The Phillies, however haven’t confused me
too much, they seem to have gone through the winter meetings with the
kind of laid back approach we are used to seeing over the last few
years. Its almost a mirror of the way Charlie Manuel has led the ball
club to it’s current high standards and it looks as though Ruben Amaro
Jr, is moving in the right direction to get the Phillies back to the
World Series for the 3rd year in a row.

Yes I know it’s only December and spring
training is some way off, and yes, we have to endure the rants and raves
of the NFL before we even see arrivals at spring training camp, but I
have no doubts at this point that the Phillies will be in a position to
make a run at the ultimate goal again in 2010.

So far they have managed to secure an
excellent player for 3rd base at the expense of the Tigers,

(Detroit Tigers not Tiger Woods or
Tony the Tiger)
the
welcoming back into the Phillies club house of Placido Polanco was a definite
step up, although Pedro Feliz was a good solid 3rd baseman, I believe
Polanco will be better and will definitely produce more offense.

With bench players Ben Francisco and
Gregg Dobbs already proven to be great assets for the Phillies, the
additions of Brian Schneider, Juan Castro and Ross Gload have given the
Phillies a group of bench players that can be called upon when needed
with confidence.

The only confusion would be the lack of
moves to build a bullpen suited to support the strong lineup of
players that are now assembled. Yes, there is still plenty of time, but
players are beginning to become unavailable. I had thought a favorite of
mine may be in a position to return to the Phillies, but it seems the
Brewers have already made a deal to prevent that from happening by
signing Randy Wolf, whom I think would have been worthwhile back
in a Phillies uniform.

The Roy
Halladay
saga continues, with pundits still placing the Phillies
near the top of the list of possibles, personally I still think Halladay is too
pricey and will still be on the trading block come July.

It
looks as though Chan Ho Park will move on to another team, since
talks seem to have stalled with the Phillies and Scott Eyre is doubtful.
The Phillies still have issues with Lidge, Moyer and Romero to resolve
with regard to injuries and performance so they need some assistance in
the bullpen that is not already there.

Some
suggestions for the front office to consider…

Joe
Beimel, Kiko Calero, Josh Fogg, Jon Garland, John Smoltz,
Russ Springer and Luis Vizcaino, all of which have their own issues, but
any of them could be of assistance to the Phillies bullpen which was
badly beaten up at times in 2009. Although non of them jump out at you I
think Beimel is a good lefty and can be used in situations left open by
Eyre and Romero.

(Getty
images)

Smoltz is obviously a good
addition to any pitching staff and I think will have a good 2010 given
the chance, he also has the mentality to start or close given the
chance, he is over his injury and showed good stuff for the Cards at the
end of 2009, the others you could almost just pick a name out of a hat
and get something similar from, although some may be a little more
durable than others.

It’s 2 weeks to Christmas and this
time of year that brings back memories and creates new ones for
everyone, some good and some bad obviously, but I hope everyone can
focus on the good ones. For me one there is always one song that makes
me realize Christmas is actual here, it first hit the UK charts in 1973
and is probably the greatest Christmas single in the UK, has been
re-released every decade since then and covered by a number of different
artists over the years. For those who weren’t even thought of back in
1973 here is a glimpse of the number one music show in the UK in ’73
with what were the two most popular radio DJ’s as presenters. Freaky how
times change, but I still love the song.

Now it feels like Christmas
is getting close….

Phillies Sign Placido Polanco to 3 Year Deal….

Phillies look to have completed
plans for 3rd base, although this morning it seemed to still be just a
rumor, in fact the Hot
Stove
was reporting the Astros as contenders last night, while today
he was in Philadelphia for a medical, the Phillies fans can celebrate
the return of Placido Polanco.

In a deal that is reportedly
worth $18 million for 3 years, it seems Placido was willing to move to
3rd base to get the opportunity to return to a Phillies uniform.

Where in the World Am I ??

NO, I didn’t completely lose
my mind, I haven’t forgotten where I live or anything like that, but
this week, where I am means I can see children
from anywhere around 5 years old an up carrying guns, rifles to be
exact, I can also see teenagers and adults, both male and female
carrying rifles. I can see these people trying to hide and keep there
gun toting youngsters quite so as not to be heard or seen.

Where am
I?…
Afghanistan…   Iran…
Iraq….   NO, NO and NO…. I am in fact in the good
old United States of America. If you haven’t already figured it
out, it’s hunting season and this week is gun season, well
here in Ohio anyway. I am told the deer population is high, so it helps
keep them from over running the farmers land and destroying the crops.
Okay I guess I can live with that, here in Tuscarawas County, (pronounced
TUSK-A-RAR-WUS, I think
) I am told that the deer population is one
of the highest in Ohio, if not the highest, to the point some land
owners had hired guns out all summer long reducing the deer population.

We get people from all
around, out of state, city dwellers, etc, etc, all coming to try their
luck at shooting a deer. Now I guess it shouldn’t matter where you come from,
when guns are involved you would think time is taken to know the law and
abide by it, plus you would also think that those who choose to go out
into the woods and try to kill a poor innocent little bambi would know
the friggin difference between a deer and other animals or know a live
one from a stuffed one, but alas some tend to arrive completely
oblivious to the fact that there are other people in the world and that they
don’t just shoot at the first thing that moves.

I really don’t care nowadays whether
people hunt or not, as long as they don’t interfere with me, and by that
I mean stay off my land and don’t shoot at me when I drive down the
road. Since most all roads are country roads around here, so they nearly
all pass through the woods and areas that hunters frequent, it’s not
unusual to catch a glimpse of a hunter aiming in your direction as you
drive, even though it is not permitted and completely stupid.

I am however not the only
person who thinks people should learn the rules of hunting before going
out with your brood armed up to the teeth with ammunition and shooting
at everything, while on my daily trek, out and about I saw this hunter
who was cornered by a rather large buck, and the buck was
explaining some facts to this hunter.

This is how it went…..

WARNING…(this
video contains strong language and may not be suitable for minors, even
if they can carry a gun and shoot at things with real bullets)

..and in baseball, it seems
the Yankees and the Red Sox are going to get into a
bidding war over Halladay, although I still think he will stay in Toronto
till July, everything else seems fairly luke warm with no giant
movements, lots of minor league stuff going on and a few options being
had, but as I said nothing major, Billy Wagner went from the Red Sox to
the Braves on a 1 year deal with options, good luck with that
Atlanta…

Phillies News:

Brian Schneider signed a 2
year deal with the Phillies as back-up catcher to Carlos Ruiz, Brian is
a Phillie boy from Allentown, PA. and says he’s happy to be on the team that
his family and friends have been die hard supporters of for many years.

Silly Season Approaches…

It’s been awhile since I last posted, even with good intentions to post at least weekly, but I keep getting side tracked with different things and now Thanksgiving has passed us by and we are getting into the silly season.

Well I was going to list a few cynical thanks here that I considered over Thanksgiving, like to the financial institution that lost 90% of my retirement fund, or the company that closed at the start of the year making me spend 9 months searching for a new job, to the companies I applied that think I’m either over qualified or of course they want young inexperienced cheap labor, but most of all to the Yankees because this isn’t a perfect world.

And now as we move into that silly season, a time of year that used to be, (for me anyway) a joy to see that smile on someone’s face just because you did or said something nice, almost everyone was in a good mood and would do things for others just because it was that special time of year when everyone had a little Christmas spirit (non alcoholic that is) inside of them. It wasn’t about the giving or the receiving, it was about just being nice to everyone. Yes in the perfect world it would be like that all year round and not just at Christmas time, but in a perfect world the Phillies would be World Champions again.

So nowadays instead of Christmastime it’s become the silly season, the true essence of Christmas has gone and it’s all thanks to commercialization that has become the normality for every season and those moments between each season too. It’s now a time where every company that has something to sell, fights to get you to spend your hard earned money with them, even mlb.com pounds you with emails of great gift ideas and special offers of super discounts.

What has this become, a time when more often than not people spend more than they can afford on useless gifts to earn the love and affection of others, and what’s worse is people expect to receive something from others and will categorize those givers based on what has been given. If you must venture out into those over crowded shopping malls and department stores to seek out the perfect gift for those people you are seeking to impress with your lavish present then here’s some guidelines….

Woman buying for a man –

1 – Power tools, Computers, Electronic gadgets,  are not all made equal, guys will prefer certain brands and models

2 – Those infomercial gadgets, really suck

3 – Socks, ties, underwear, are best left to the wife or mother

4 – Cologne, gift cards or alcohol, are fairly safe

Man buying for woman –

1 – Sexy lingerie, face it guys that’s for you not her

2 – A day at the spa, exercise clothes or equipment – says you think she’s fat or ugly or both

3 – Cell phones, PDA’s, electronic tracking devices – not cool says your a freaky, jealous maniac

4 – Gift cards – say you were too lazy to think of something

5 – Perfume – know the exact brand that she likes and you are safe

To those companies fighting for everyone’s money consider these song suggestions from  Eric O’Shea….

What’s up with that – Universal

There are some things that I
see, hear or sometimes just notice in general that can ‘irk me’,
really ‘p*ss me off’, even ‘amuse me’, and then there are those
things that I just sit back and say to myself ‘What’s up with that?

This week I saw this article
about the movie ‘Couples
Retreat’
, the movie itself looks as though it maybe fairly
humorous, (although the critics rated it below par), but that wasn’t what the article was about. It seems in
someone’s infinite wisdom they removed two of the characters from the
poster promoting the movie in the U.K. (United Kingdom).

The two actors
removed were Faizon Love and Kali Hawk, both happen to be black actors.
In response to outrage over the move, a Universal spokesman said
the altered poster aimed "to simplify the poster to actors who are
most [recognizable] in international markets." –

If you continue to read the
article they quote a NY
Times article from 2007
, like a child caught
with their hand in the cookie jar, they attempt to pass the
blame for this onto the international viewing audiences, and since this
was about the poster for the U.K. (United Kingdom) I can only assume
that for the most part it is directed at the viewing public in the U.K.
(United Kingdom). The New York Times article that is quoted references a
James Ulmer statement "The international marketplace is still
fairly racist."

It seems they came to this
conclusion because certain movies with black actors didn’t generate
enough revenue from the international market, however having read the
article, the movies that are actually used as examples that didn’t meet
expectations, some of them I hadn’t heard of and others just simply
sucked in my opinion. But the NY Times article is not what this is
about, it’s about Universal’s need to pass the buck for there misgivings.

The article
in question is nothing more than a media outlet to pass blame from
Universal and attach a racist label on the international viewing
audience, in this case the U.K. (United Kingdom). I’m guessing the
arrogance of another large American organization, Universal, would not
even consider the fact that some of their movies just suck and aren’t
appealing to the majority of international viewers, regardless of the
color of the actors skin.

Should we not classify the
American public as racists towards the British, since the infinite
wisdom of TV and Film producers in America are constantly remaking
British sitcoms etc. with American actors, since they feel the British
dialogue is not fully understood in America or should we just sit back
and classify the TV and Film industry as total idiots that have no idea
about the viewing public anywhere in the world. They would rather blame
the viewers for the mistakes they make instead of accepting
responsibility for their own actions.

Baseball’s – ‘What’s
up with that’

Well done baseball’s
ingenious methodology in giving out awards, lets reward a dope smoker
with a Cy Young, obviously Cardinals fans are going to be really p*ssed
off, and you can’t blame them. Next you’ll be giving the MVP award to
Manny Ramirez.

Health and Safety in Play…

There are a number of ways
to become famous in sports, you can even become an international sport
star given the right circumstances.

For example you could be an
over egotistical jerk like TO, you could just be the very best at
what you do like Tiger Woods, there is even the chance that you
can have a great career that may or may not be destroyed by the alleged
use of enhancements like Barry Bonds, you could also have a
famous wife and play in a number of different countries yet still be one
the very best in your home country like David Beckham.

It has been some time since
I saw this type of behavior  that made a person famous in multiple
countries over night, or at least a couple of days.

What the hell was she
thinking… not a lot apparently…

I guess we can think
ourselves lucky baseball isn’t a contact sport, unless you get hit by a
wayward baseball…. or a player charging the mound, or the now famous
glass of beer…

Junk Mail can make you Millions

This week, as normal I
received my regular volume of Junk Mail, ordinarily it ends up in
the trash can along with the chain letter style emails family and
friends seem to enthusiastically send out, I can only assume in fear
that the punch line of said emails will come true. For me however more
bad luck can only transform itself into good luck, plus the knowledge
that emails do not have any power over the universe and the fact that if
emails could render anybody rich and shameless just by forwarding
it to 10 people then we would receive them under the same pretence as we
do the  ‘Make Millions from Google‘ emails.

There seems to be a new resurgence
of emails relating to money that you don’t even have to do anything to
obtain this wealth, you just have to be you. I refer to the ‘inheritance‘,
email lottery’ or the ‘you’ve been selected‘ type emails.
Sometimes boredom gets in the way of common sense and the lack of
baseball induced excitement invariably increases the boredom I decided
to look at some of these emails.

‘Inheritance’

It seems that I, along with
all the other ‘undisclosed recipients’ have an Aunt or some other
relative, who believes I am the sole heir to her fortunes. It doesn’t
matter that I have older siblings, I am still the sole survivor of her
millions, and all I have to do is send my information to the attorney
listed to have the 340 million US dollars transferred to my bank
account.

So there you have it, I am
now rich and shameless and can purchase box seats behind home
plate for every game at home and away that the Phillies will play
in the 2010 season.

’email lottery’

It also seems that this week
my email address along with all those ‘undisclosed recipients’ have
won the ’email lottery’ in Australia and Europe. I won 2 email
lotteries that I didn’t enter, how cool is that, and all I have to do is
respond with my personal and banking information to collect the millions
of dollars in foreign currency, which after a quick conversion would
give me another 680 million US dollars

What more could I ask for, I
am more than just ‘rich and shameless’ I am now a billionaire and
all I have done is open 3 emails.

‘you’ve been selected’

How much more money could I
make this week, it seems quite a bit actually because my email address
is very popular. I received from 4 different people telling that I
personally, along with all the other ‘undisclosed recipients’
were people of good nature and would be able to benefit from the 137
million US dollars stuck in an account in Nigeria, and that the person
controlling that account needs my help and I can get to keep 10% of the
funds, if I just give them my personal information and banking details.

I figured 10% of 137 million
US dollars, is peanuts compared to the billion or so I already had, but
greed being the ultimate evil I wanted everything, so I added the 4 lots
of 14 million US dollars to my total income this week.

Of course on top of all this
money I could have also made millions from Google.

What amazes me about the
stupidity of the people that send these emails is they believe that
people are stupid enough to respond to them.

1 – The email addresses they
send them from in no way reflect the content of the email as most come
from the new spam email service supplied by ‘gmail’. I know a lot
of normal people use ‘gmail‘ accounts, but eventually ‘gmail
will get the same bad name as ‘msn‘, ‘hotmail’, ‘yahoo
and ‘aol‘. Although all but ‘aol‘ has managed a recovery
from there email servers being branded as spam accounts by many.

2- The IP addresses of the
mail servers which send these emails is not even close to the location
they claim to be sending them from and most times is being used as a
mirror server.

3- The return email address
can never be found as it is cancelled moments after the mass email is
sent out.

4 – If you are going to
personalize an email and hope someone takes the bait, DON’T
send it to ‘undisclosed recipients’

To all those people that
have being irresponsible and fallen for one of these types of emails,
you really shouldn’t be allowed to have an email address, and to all
those people that find it a requirement to harass us with these spam
emails, do me a favor and TAKE MY EMAIL ADDRESS OFF YOUR F*CKING LIST

Back to baseball – It seems Brad
Lidge
wants us to feel sorry for him because he may have an
injury which he didn’t disclose, he felt it was better to blow a save in
the World Series than go on the DL. Well Brad, now you have to put up
2008 type numbers in 2010 for any normal person to take you seriously
again….

Finally bye bye Brett
Myers….

If you stuck around long
enough to read this babbling piece of crap then your as bored as me
without baseball….

GO EAGLES….for now
